Nominee – Bloomindale High School
Nominating Team – Newsome HS
Reasoning – Every season the Bloomingdale team is helpful and willing to jump down from the stands to help other teams in need with their floors. They always wish other teams luck, and are genuine when they do so. They’re our neighbors, and even though we are in the same class, they have proven time and again that Newsome has a friend in Bloomingdale. My students also always share fun stories from watching shows with Bloomingdale in the stands.
Nominee – Newsome HS
Nominating Team – Fleming Island HS
Reasoning – The Kevin Paulus Award is about sportsmanship, that golden mean of camaraderie and competition. The idea of respect for each other while working as hard as you know how to be better than your peers. I have seen this philosophy represented repeatedly by this team in such an unassuming fashion that I feel it bears recognition. Newsome High school always works to be the best; the performers dig in and work to entertain and master their craft, so much so, that they seldom find themselves on the downside of a competitive match up. However, when they don’t best their competitors, they are cordial and congratulatory. Even though you can see the gleam of competition always burning in their hearts, they manage to be kind. This trait is a mark of a team worthy of the Kevin Paulus Award.
Nominee – Tampa Independent
Nominating Team – Auburndale High School
Reasoning – They are so humble and are always willing to assist if a guard needs floor help. Just a great group of students.
Nominee – UCF Pegasus
Nominating Team – University of South Florida Open
Reasoning – The University of South Florida Open Winterguard would like to nominate UCF Pegasus. At the Tampa regional one of their members, named Cameron, showed outstanding Sportsmanship. Here is the first hand account of what happened told from one of our members:” I was one of the last ones getting off the floor after our performance & my hands were full of poles/bases/equipment. There was one last prop left that I was struggling to pick up (as people are rushing at me folding the floor). Pegasus was exiting the gym, he ran up & asked if I needed help, then grabbed the whole prop & came outside with us. It was so nice that he was clearly leaving but instead stopped to help!”
