Week One of FFCC Outdoor was off to a challenging start with the arrival of Hurricane Helene on Thursday. We’re keeping everyone who was impacted by this devastating storm in our thoughts, and hoping you are able to safely recover.
Unfortunately, our show at South Fork High School was canceled because of the impact of the hurricane, but our show at Tocoi Creek was able to move forward as planned. Thank you to the Tocoi Creek Staff and Parents, many of whom are still without power after the storm, for pulling together to put the show on for our bands who were able to join us. We’d also like to recognize all of the bands, their parents, staff, and fans who packed the stadium last night after a very challenging week. Last but not least, a huge thank you to our contest staff and judges who traveled from near and far to be there for the show despite the circumstances. We appreciate your dedication to the FFCC and its members.
The Tocoi Creek show featured bands from primarily the northeast region, with some traveling all the way from Orlando to join us. Unfortunately, a few bands closer to the west coast were unable to make it due to the effects of the storm, but we had an incredible crowd and amazing performances nonetheless. The show was broken up into two parts, 1A & 2A classes began in the afternoon, and the 3A/4A/5A classes joined us after dinner.
Crescent City HS kicked off the day in 1A Class with their show, “Crescendos of Love.” Providence School of Jacksonville took home first place and best in class awards in General Effect and Music, and tied with Trinity Christian Academy for Best Visual in Class. Their pirate production featured thematic costuming, a number of transforming props, and some rousing pirate songs and solos. Middleburg High School placed second with their show, “Plantasia,” featuring colorful plant props. Middleburg’s Colorguard took home the best in class award for 1A. North Marion High School rounded out the top three with their space themed show. Palatka Jr./Sr. High finished with a Best in Class Percussion Award.
In 2A Class, Fletcher placed first, taking home Best in Class awards in General Effect, Music, and Percussion, and tied with Clay HS for Best in Class Visual. Clay High School finished second and earned the Best in Class Colorguard with their fun construction themed show that had everyone humming Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” for the rest of the day- check out the clip on our TikTok so you can get it stuck in your head too! Wolfson High School of Jacksonville finished in third with their “Stranger Things” program in their first season of FFCC Outdoor.
After dinner we enjoyed a huge 3A class, where Ponte Vedra HS came out on top with their graffiti themed show. They also earned Best in Class Awards for General Effect, Music, Visual, and Colorguard. Orange Park HS finished in second place with a Stanley Kubrick inspired show featuring a compilation of themes from his movies. Yulee HS brought home third place in this super competitive class with their Prince of Egypt show, and earned the Best in Class Award for Percussion. We also enjoyed performances from Lake Buena Vista, all the way from Orlando, Ridgeview HS, Nease HS, St. Augustine HS, and West Nassau HS in 3A class.
The evening concluded with performances in the 4A and 5A classes. Our host school, Tocoi Creek, performed their show “Namaste” and earned first place and Best in Class Awards in Music, Visual, General Effect, Colorguard, and Percussion in class 4A. Oakleaf HS placed second in 5A with a side show themed production entitled “People are Strange” featuring some fun juggling (see our instagram) and more. Fleming Island HS shared their program “Beyond the Horizon,” featuring a beautiful flute and horn duet you can watch on our TikTok, and gorgeous sunset themed colors in purples and yellows. They took home Best in Class awards in Music, Visual, General Effect, Colorguard, and Percussion for class 5A.
Since the event was divided into to two separate shows, there were two overall Runners-Up and two Grand Champions. Providence High School of Jacksonville was named Grand Champion of the 1A/2A event, with Fletcher HS earning Runner-Up honors. In the evening show, Fleming Island HS was crowned Grand Champion, with Ponte Vedra HS taking home the Runner Up title.
